Associate Vice President for Strategy and Business Development
Position Summary
In partnership with the physician leadership, responsible for planning and implementing strategic initiatives to pursue UTHealth Houston's ambition. The Associate Vice President (AVP) Strategy and Business Development works closely with clinical leadership, consultants, and finance to identify service line and department opportunities to enhance customer value, enrich the academic mission, and increase access to the citizens of Texas. Contributes to long-term strategy for business development, network development, and affiliation activities. This position serves as an expert in strategic planning, execution, business development, communications, community outreach, affiliations and partnerships.
Position Key Accountabilities
- Effectively advise physician and executive leadership in identifying and quantifying new business opportunities and working with key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive value proposition that will include appropriate data by which senior leadership can make informed decisions regarding investment requests.
- Participates in successfully identifying and implementing business development initiatives to increase access, efficiency, and profitability in support of the overall clinical, research, and educational mission.
- Works with leaders across all three aspects of the mission of UTHealth Houston to support innovative, integrated technological advances aimed at enhancing the interoperability of clinical, operational, and financial information systems.
- Applies expert knowledge of strategy, affiliations, and partnerships to formulate and facilitate strategic growth projects and initiatives.
- Demonstrates excellent formal presentation and interpersonal communication skills that result in an understanding of, and commitment to, strategic initiatives.
- Influence and motivate staff, project team members, senior executives, physicians, and leaders at partner institutions.
- Problem-solving unique issues, often without precedent, and functions with a high degree of autonomy.
- Serves as a liaison with internal and external stakeholders.
- Manages Human Resources activities for direct reports in regard to: recruiting and selection; hiring and termination, training, development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.
- Responsible for the design, execution, and effectiveness of a system of internal controls that provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded; financial information is reliable and compliant with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills
- Experience leading strategic business planning and implementation for a multi-faceted healthcare operation.
- Demonstrated success in achieving measurable results in a diverse stakeholder landscape balancing competing and conflicting interests.
- Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders across the University of Texas System and outside organizations.
- Highly advanced verbal and written communication, facilitation, and presentation skills.
- Ability to represent the enterprise with external healthcare providers and organizations.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office software and database applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Marketing or related discipline required Master's Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a closely related field preferred
Minimum Experience
9 years of experience in academically-affiliated healthcare settings (provider segments, strategic and business planning, market assessment, basic finance/budget principles) required Demonstrated experience in healthcare leadership, clinical operations, or related services with business development and marketing/communication focus required
Physical Requirements
Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
