The Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, is seeking a dynamic academic Anesthesiologist at the rank of Professor for the position of Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs and Development to oversee the academic career enhancement of new faculty, Assistant Professors, and Associate Professors. The department employs over 120 Faculty Anesthesiologists, and 80 Advanced Practice Providers (CRNAs and CAAs) and has one of the largest Anesthesiology residency programs in the country with 30 approved positions per class. The department is affiliated with the Cizik School of Nursing SRNA DNP program and has the new UTHealth Houston Anesthesiology Assistant Master of Science in Anesthesia program, the only one based in the state of Texas, which is scheduled to start in August 2024. The Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs and Development will report to the Chairman, Dr. Holger Eltzschig, and Executive Vice Chair, Dr. Charlie Artime.


 Position Key Accountabilities:

The Vice Chair of Faculty Development responsibilities will include working with the departmental Faculty Development Team and the UTHealth Houston Office of Faculty Affairs and Development to: 

 

  • Develop a program for early career development – orientation and onboarding, lectures and workshops, and an outline for career development and the promotion process.
  • Establish a mentorship program that pairs faculty mentors and mentees.
  • Launch a Faculty Leadership Development Program.
  • Maintain a high-quality Faculty Development website.
  • Outline domains for the promotion process, fostering faculty development of exceptionalism in one or more domains.
  • Build a faculty database to track the promotion process.
  • Advise the Chair on faculty development priorities, funding needs, and infrastructure support.
  • Act as a champion regarding faculty wellness, engagement, recruitment, and retention.
  • Address faculty professionalism issues in collaboration with the Chair and other relevant Vice Chairs and institutional offices supporting professionalism.

Qualifications:

  • MD/DO or equivalent with Board Certification in Anesthesiology
  • Title or experience commensurate with a rank of Professor
  • Evidence of proven leadership in Faculty Development designed to assist faculty in the 3 domains of academic pillars, namely role as teacher & educator, researcher & scholar, and leader & administrator.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
