McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, a leading academic health center, invites applications for a full-time Assistant (tenure-track), Associate, or Full Professor position in the Department of Neurosurgery and Texas Institute for Restorative Neurotechnologies (TIRN). TIRN is focused on innovative diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to target functional disorders of the human brain. We leverage the latest advancements in neuroscience, neuro-technology, and neuroinformatics to transform education, research, and the management of these disorders of the brain. 


We are looking for a candidate who is interested in questions regarding auditory processing, audio-motor transformations, and/or speech processing in cortical language networks using systems-level approaches and computational methods (e.g. machine learning). We are interested in an individual who currently uses or is interested in intracranial recordings direct cortical stimulation, and multimodal integration with fMRI, DTI, and MEG. 


The candidate will have access to a research-only 3T MRI scanner, a MEG scanner, and a very busy epilepsy surgery program performing intracranial implants, implants of innovative recording devices, and resections regularly. We routinely collect language data from a wide variety of tumor and epilepsy patients. Collaborations will be encouraged with other auditory/language experts within UTHealth and other well-renowned institutions locally, at the Texas Medical Center and Rice University, as well as other national and international institutions. The research environment includes language and epilepsy projects that are well funded by NIH, UTHealth Houston, and philanthropic support. The successful candidate may also be cross-appointed at Rice University. Close collaboration with existing faculty at TIRN is expected. The candidate will have the opportunity to train and supervise undergraduate, graduate, and MD/PhD students at UTHealth and Rice University.

 

Position Key Accountabilities:

·         Conducting independent and collaborative research, actively pursuing grants and sponsored contracts, participating

        in scholarly research and publishing results

·         Supervising post-docs and graduate student research assistants in research and development activities

·         Participating, developing, and expanding the scope of collaborative and funded-program portfolio

·         Participating in the education mission by enhancing the curriculum for students, residents, and fellows

·         Participating in Quality Assurance (QA) efforts, the department chair's annual faculty review (AFR), and other departmental

       meetings and/or retreats

·         Coordinating with the Office of Development for philanthropic support

Qualifications:

Qualified applicants must demonstrate a commitment to excellence, discovery, and service, have the potential to be outstanding in their field of expertise, and share an interest in fulfilling the common goals of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. Preferred applicants will possess a Ph.D. in Neuroscience or a related field with post-doctoral experience in this field. A record of verifiable and published research with potential to obtain extramural, peer-reviewed funding, and excellent teamwork and communication skills are also required.
