The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), a leading academic center - McGovern Medical School seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position for The John P. McGovern, M.D. Center for Humanities and Ethics. The rank is open and compensation is based on qualifications and experience.

The McGovern Center was established in 2004 to examine moral, spiritual, and cultural aspects of medicine and the health sciences. Housed in McGovern Medical School, the McGovern Center collaborates with all six health professional schools of UTHealth, delivering quality ethics and humanities education, programming, research, and scholarship.

Position Key Accountabilities:

The successful candidate will devote the majority of her/his time to McGovern Center activities, such as: teaching in medical school and residency programs, serving on institutional committees, and engaging in various educational and funded research programs throughout the health science center. If the successful candidate is an M.D., the remaining time will be devoted to clinical care.

Minimum Qualifications:

-M.D. and Ph.D. in bioethics or a medical humanities-related discipline

-Ph.D. in  bioethics or a medical humanities-related discipline
-M.D. with demonstrated interest and experience (e.g., M.A., certificate,
 fellowship, etc.) in bioethics or a medical humanities-related discipline 
-Demonstrated interest and experience in health professional ethics
-Record of excellent scholarship and teaching.

While the specific area of expertise is open as well, the McGovern Center is seeking a candidate who (1) has knowledge, skills, and research interests in clinical ethics; and (2) offers a broad humanistic perspective on life in medicine. This candidate will contribute to the current programs of the McGovern Center and also help expand programming to residents and faculty.

Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2017. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2018.
