McGovern Medical School (MMS) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) seeks a dynamic physician leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine (EM).  UTHealth Houston is the most comprehensive academic health center in the UT System and the U.S. Gulf Coast region. We are proud to be located in the world’s largest medical center, which allows us to partner with several of the nation’s nationally recognized clinical affiliates.

The university's primary teaching hospitals are Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center (the highest admission volume Level 1 Trauma Center in the nation), Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, and Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital (the highest volume Emergency Department in Houston).

The Department of Emergency Medicine runs a robust clinical service for EM and hospitalist services.  This year the Department is projected to provide care for approximately 75,000 patients through the MH emergency department and almost 88,000 patients at LBJ. In addition, our hospitalist service cared for 80,000 patient encounters across five locations in Fiscal Year 2023. The department employs 92 faculty, 51 Staff Physicians, and 110 Advanced Practice Providers who are responsible for staffing Adult and Pediatric EM, as well as Adult and Pediatric Hospitalist services at our two primary teaching hospitals and four community hospitals.

The department has an annual operating budget of $64M, including $13M in clinical revenue. The department offers a vibrant and diverse working environment characterized by an atmosphere of supportive, interdisciplinary collaboration. Our Emergency Medicine residency program, celebrating its thirtieth year, is one of the larger EM residency programs in the US.  The department also supports seven clinical fellowships as well as one third-year and three fourth-year medical student electives.

Qualifications 

Candidates for the Chair position should be board certified in Emergency Medicine, have served in an academic leadership role in a school of medicine, and be eligible for appointment as a senior-level faculty member.  Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience as physician-scientists who demonstrate a successful track record in publishing and in securing grant funding. Exceptional personal and leadership qualities are required, with a documented history of implementing clinical and educational programs, mentoring and supporting faculty development and scholarship, and promoting innovative research.
