McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, a leading academic health center, invites applications for a full-time faculty Medical Director position in the Department of Family & Community Medicine. The selected candidate will contribute to the department's mission to provide health care to an urban underserved population and train the next generation of physicians.
 

The Medical Director at each site is the physician leader of primary care services in the site clinic. The Medical Director has the ultimate responsibility for clinical and educational services/activities at the clinic.  Day-to-Day coordination of activities for education (site coordinator) could be the assignment of another on-site faculty member. This position is 80% Patient Care Clinical Time, 20% Director Administrative Time and supervises clinic site faculty, nurse practitioners, and trainees (medical students and residents). 

 

Medical Director Scope:

 

Within established Department and/or Harris Health System policies, is responsible for overall monitoring as well as coordinating the successful day-to-day operation of clinical and educational activities at the clinic site.  Frequently interacts and is involved with the Clinic Operations Manager and Nurse Manager in all areas of clinic operations.  Together, the triad ensures that the clinic is providing the best possible patient care with maximum efficiency. 

 

Medical Director Duties:

 

The Medical Director has the ultimate responsibility for clinical and educational services/activities at the clinic site.  Day-to-Day coordination of activities for education (site coordinator) could be the assignment of another on-site faculty member however the Medical Director is expected to participate in teaching/precepting of medical students/residents.

 

Essential duties of the job include, but are not limited to:

  1. Ensuring quality of clinical services, including:

  • Peer Review

  • Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Activities

  • Harris Health System performance improvement activities

  • Clinician involvement in the development and implementation of improvement processes

  1. Ensuring accuracy and completeness for the billing and documentation of the individual clinicians:

  • Encounter form

  • Coding

  • Medical record notes

  • Internal auditing of productivity measures

  1. Supervising of all UTH MDs, NPs, and locums:

  • Clinical activities

  • Patient complaints

  • Leave requests (vacation, Continuing Medical Education, etc)

  • Personnel problems

  • Ensure implementation of UTH/HHS policies and procedures

  1. Participating in assignments UTH/HHS Committees (consideration of preference and/or career development to be used in determining assignment)

  1. Positively and actively co-managing the clinic site with the Clinical Practice Manager (involve Nurse Manager on an “as needed” basis):

  • Organization of delivery of services

  • Budget

  • Productivity measures (Relative Value Units, etc)

  • Non-physician personnel

  • Development and implementation of clinic site policies and procedures

  • Problem-solving

  • Equipment acquisition

  1. Serving as a role model for all service providers in the clinic

  2. Facilitating conflict management and resolution between physician and non-physician personnel

  3. Being responsible for in-service education for clinicians

  4. Liaising between the clinic site clinicians and UTH/HHS

  5. Assisting in recruiting Faculty Physicians and Nurse Practitioners for the clinic site

  6. Developing and maintaining an atmosphere that insures positive morale, motivation, and nurturing of all clinic site personnel

  7. Supporting community activities as they apply to provide optimal patient care

  8. Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • M.D., D.O.,

  • ABFM Board Certified

  • Texas Medical License or be eligible for a Texas Faculty Temporary License.  

  • Multilingual skills preferred.
