We are hiring immediately for a Technology and Education Support Specialist  I to join the McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics at UTHealth in Houston, TX 77030. In this position, you will assist with making appointments, opening and closing classrooms/partitions, arranging tables, checking lectern equipment, handing out mics, coordinating with caterers to make sure there is space for food, managing classroom recordings, making minor edits to recordings, etc.

Position Summary:

Provides entry-level school-wide support for faculty, staff, and students for a wide range of educational and administrative technology and audio-visual hardware and software. Additionally, provides guidance, support and expertise in instructional design principles, delivers training in all supported systems, and designs and maintains school websites.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Provides technical support for faculty, staff, and students in the use of an extensive suite of educational and administrative technologies and applications. 
  • Collaborates with other IT staff to identify and resolve technical issues.
  • Coordinates, develops, and delivers programs including workshops and training sessions to inform faculty on methods for effective use of educational technology and instructional design principles and practices. 
  • Develops and delivers end-user technical training programs and materials in support of educational and administrative systems, including training in educational topics as needed. 
  • Provides expertise in recording and editing of video and audio for educational, administrative and promotional purposes. 
  • Provides support for classroom audio-visual hardware and software, including the setup and maintenance and delivery of technical assistance during lectures. 
  • Supports the design and development of instructional materials and online and in-person course content. 
  • Provides instructional design support to faculty in the development and implementation of technology-enhanced teaching and learning strategies, following educational best practices.
  • Supports faculty in the design, development, and creation of courseware tools to enhance student learning.
  • Creates templates, models, and standards to be used school-wide in teaching and learning. 
  • Develops and maintains school-wide externals websites, intranet, and various specific sites. 
  • Coordinates the publishing of content across multiple platforms, ensuring compliance with web/brand standards and accessibility guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
     

Certification/Skills:

  • Excellent communications skills (both verbal and written)
  • High level of computer skill and technical aptitude
  • Proven problem-solving/troubleshooting skills
  • Preferred: Experience with one or more of the following educational/administrative technology systems
    • Learning Management System (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.)
    • Computer-based Testing Systems (ExamSoft, Questionmark etc.)
    • Lecture Capture System (Panopto, Kaltura, etc.) 
    • Audience Response System (PollEverywhere, Top Hat, etc.)
    • Video Conferencing Software (Teams, WebEx, Zoom, etc.)
    • Survey Tools (Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey, Google Forms, etc.)
    • Courseware Creation Tools (Articulate Storyline, Camtasia, etc.)
    • Administrative Software (Interfolio, EXXAT, AMP, SmartEvals, etc.)
  • Preferred: Familiarity with web development and design principles and tools
  • Preferred: Understanding of current educational theories and best practices

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Education, Instructional / Educational Technology, Instructional Design or a related field, or relevant work experience in lieu of education.

Minimum Experience:

  • One (1) year of related experience in instructional design, web development, or educational technology, or related fields, or equivalent combination of education, teaching/training, and applications support.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
