Position Summary:

The RN First Assistant (RNFA) performs first assistant duties for pediatric patients undergoing surgical procedures in the operating room at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Children’s Heart Center as specified in the designated standardized procedure. The role practices under the direct supervision of the surgeon who has privileges in cardiovascular surgery and in accordance with designated standardized procedures. Performs first assistant duties for pediatric patients undergoing surgical procedures in the operating room at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Children’s Heart Center as specified in the designated standardized procedure. Ideal candidates will have completed an RNFA certification and have experience in pediatrics.  This role will be working in the Houston Medical center for our pediatric surgery department.  



Key Accountabilities:

1.  Assesses patient needs; plans and implements patient care activities and evaluates the patient’s response to treatment.
2.  Assures compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency specifications to meet federal, state and local standards.
3.  Assists medical and administrative staff in formulating goals and objectives to deliver the most accurate and timely care possible.
4.  Instructs and counsels patients and families or treatment team concerning home care, potential problems, emotional concerns or utilization review status.
5.  Participates in regularly scheduled team conferences, and collaborates with related health care providers in treatment discharge planning and provisions of care.
6.  Serves in an information resources capacity for hospital nursing personnel, provides advice concerning procedures, care techniques, and other developments.
7.  Functions as liaison between patients and physicians, other nursing personnel, and community agencies/resources.
8.  Participates in the development of nursing policies.  Develops and/or acquires instructional materials, supplies, and equipment necessary to conduct training sessions.
9.  Prepares and maintains records and reports concerning operations.  Remains abreast of developments in the field of nursing or utilization review by attending seminars and workshops, communicating with peers, and reading pertinent literature.  Incorporates such advancements in continuing education and nursing practice.
10.  All other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Current nursing licensure in the State of Texas. Certification as an operating room nurse. Completion of RNFA program and certified as a RNFA.

 

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited School of Nursing plus two year of nursing experience, OR,
Associates degree in nursing from an accredited School of Nursing plus four years of nursing experience, OR, Nursing diploma (three-year program) plus three years of nursing experience. Completion of a RNFA, Certification of RNFA

 

Minimum Experience:

RN First Assistant Certification required 

Two (2) years of nursing experience with a BSN.
Three (3) years of nursing experience with a Nursing Diploma.
Four (4) years of nursing experience with an ADN.

Two years of operating room experience preferred.  

Knowledge of nursing functions in the care of a surgical patient to include preoperative, intra operative and post operative.

Extensive knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of congenital heart surgeries patients and procedures a plus.  

Pediatrics experience preferred.

Advanced interpersonal ability necessary to routinely interact with high-risk families.

High analytical ability to assess patient’s needs and exercise professional judgment in the establishing of a nursing plan.
Must be CPR certified.
