Social Media Specialist in Public Affairs
Position Summary:
UTHealth Houston is looking for a creative, organized social media specialist who loves to tell medical and scientific stories that change people’s lives while featuring the faculty, staff, and students who make up the heart of the University. You must be able to think quickly, write well, create video content, and produce material that encourages engagement between UTHealth Houston and its audience. This employee will work within our Media Relations team in the Department of Public Affairs to create and execute comprehensive social media strategies to drive traffic and build awareness about UTHealth Houston.
You must be able to effectively use data analysis of our social media sites to improve the University’s strategy and engagement on several platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Instagram, and YouTube. Candidates need to know how to organize information, stay up to date on health trends, and determine what will make compelling posts about health and education news. Applicants need to have strong communication, project management, video, editing, design, writing, and proofreading skills. You should be able to create and edit short video content that is effective in getting a message across. This is a fast-paced, collaborative, and flexible work environment that often requires employees to work on multiple time-sensitive projects at the same time with ease.
This is a full-time position that is salaried and classified as exempt. You will be eligible for all UTHealth Houston benefits including coverage under our healthcare plan as well as participation in a pension plan administered by the State of Texas. Your home office will be in the heart of the Texas Medical Center in our University Center Tower, and we work a hybrid schedule.

Position Key Accountabilities:
- Creates and implements an organic content plan for social media to support the promotion of the university.
- Writes and creates compelling and engaging content tailored to each social media channel that supports the university’s mission of outstanding research, education, and clinical care.
- Creates videos and collaborates with designers, artists, and multimedia specialists on teams within the Departments of Public Affairs and Development to create visually compelling materials, including graphics, videos, and messaging.
- Monitors social media daily.
- Engages with individuals on social platforms with appropriate responses in a timely manner.
- Capitalizes on breaking news and Internet trends to create content that informs and educates followers.
- Seeks out new ways to drive communication and engagement by optimizing tags, keywords, and various web marketing avenues based on data to increase Social Engine Optimization (SEO).
- Collaborates on the design and implements advertising on social media platforms.
- Provides quarterly reports that measure analytics on social media content performance and suggest strategic direction.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills:
- Experience creating content for and managing social media channels such as Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn
- Must have experience creating and editing videos for online campaigns
- Experience using social media management platforms such as Sprout Social.
- Strong communication, project management, design, writing, editing, and proofreading skills
- Knowledge and experience in analytics
- Ability to think strategically, quickly, and creatively to develop solutions and come up with innovative ideas
- Proactive and self-sufficient
- Excellent planning and organizational skills, including the ability to meet deadlines
- Experience using the design platform Canva, Adobe Premiere
Minimum Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, or related field required.
Minimum Experience:
Two (2) years of experience in Social Media Marketing, Communications, or Digital campaigns
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
Security Sensitive:
This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215
Residency Requirement:
Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas and be willing to do a hybrid schedule.
