Exciting opportunity to join our Pediatric Surgery, Cellular Therapy program.

Performs complex, highly specialized, and time-sensitive biologic manufacturing processes; and works with, and under the direction of, facility director on translational research projects related to cell therapy and regenerative medicine.

1.     Performs a wide variety of complex biologic manufacturing processes, including, but not limited to, tissue digestion, volume reduction, cell enrichment, dose allocation, cryopreservation, thawing, cell culture and expansion, and related procedures (e.g., determination of cell count, viability, identity and potency) for autologous and allogeneic cell products, in accordance with current Good Tissue Practice (GTP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines.

2.     Carries out day-to-day facility duties (e.g., ordering, stocking of supplies, reagent inspection and receipt, maintaining a current inventory, media preparation, and trouble-shooting) and maintains accurate documentation in compliance with the FDA’s practices and regulations, as well as standards set by other accreditation agencies.

3.     Actively participates in the execution of translational research and development activities involving the GMP facility.

4.     Assists with quality assurance related activities, including, but not limited to, environmental monitoring, equipment quality control and calibration, validation, cleaning/sanitation and GMP-related training of students, employees, physicians, and scientists.

Position Summary:

Provides project management for research projects of considerable scope and complexity. Decisions impact the success of the research project(s).

 

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Provides project management for a wide variety of research experiments, including personnel, facilities, supplies, etc in support of research project desired outcomes, budgets and timelines.
  2. Plans methods and procedures for collection of data to provide information needed.
  3. May oversee the recruitment of study participants and field interviewers, the development and conducting of field interviewing training, and tracking the progress of test subjects and cases.
  4. May conduct experiments using sophisticated equipment and applies complex techniques, methods, and procedures.
  5. Influences project direction and outcomes by identifying opportunities to enhance, re-terminate, or re-direct research activities. May monitor and revise, as necessary, the project timeline, budget, expenditures and supplies. May develop new budgets when appropriate and make independent decisions when required. 
  6. Evaluates and interprets data and provides results to investigators to support publication.
  7. Assists in the preparation and writing of research reports, manuscripts, papers and grant proposals for presentation and publication.
  8. Prepares communications of research results for the public and/or funding organizations.
  9. Provides direction and training to personnel to ensure efficient, timely and high quality results in compliance with all protocols, guidelines, regulations, etc.
  10. May mentors fellows, graduate students and others as appropriate in support of the University’s mission.
  11. Maintains quality control checks and a safe environment in compliance with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulation and codes.
  12. Manages Human Resources activities for direct reports in regards to: recruiting and selection, hiring and termination, training, professional development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Two years of experience; at least one year in a clinical stem cell processing or cellular therapy lab or blood bank preferred. On call to include evenings and weekends, receives special pay plan compensation. 

Certification/Skills:

Considerable knowledge in basic and sophisticated equipment.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in related field with four (4) years of related research experience including significant experience in a project management research role; or
Master’s degree in related field with two (2) years of related research experience including significant experience in a project management research role; or
Doctorate degree.

Minimum Experience:

Years of experience varies based on education level.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects. This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
