McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, a leading academic health center, invites applications for a full-time scientific writer position in the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery . The selected candidate contributes to the department’s mission and is dedicated to improving the health and welfare of all infants, children, and adolescents. We have a comprehensive number of surgical programs, broad clinical and laboratory research initiatives, and educational opportunities for medical students, residents, and fellows.

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Scientific Writer – UT Health Pediatric Movement Disorders Program. The Scientific Writer provides support for all Investigator Initiated Trials (IIT) at the program across all campuses and report into the protocols to the IRB at the Clinical Trials Office (CTO) with a reporting line to the Pediatric Neurosurgery Movement Disorders Program. The Scientific Writer also provides writing support for all posters, abstracts and publications related to the Program. The Scientific Writer may also provide additional monitoring support to verify data related to primary endpoints. The Scientific Writer will provide support that focuses on Pediatric Neurosurgery. Serves as a liaison with the Investigator, research and clinical personnel in the Program, SPA, IRB, department grants /contracts staff, UT Health central administrative departments and funding sponsors. In addition, this position will provide resources to new investigators looking to develop research as well as foster a program to support this.
 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Plans, supervises, and directs research, investigation, or other technical operations. Provides technical expertise to facilitate the design, implementation, and analysis of procedures, techniques, and results, which enables investigators to conduct research projects.

POSITION KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1.       Determines feasibility of possible projects to ensure results will have a significant impact. Determines project feasibility in terms of staff, time, and resources.

2.       Writes, edits and submits NIH, DOD and other Grant proposals

3.       Plans and performs quantitative and qualitative research procedures in various areas of biology, chemistry, physics, and other biomedical, dental, or related scientific areas. Identifies the problem through contact with other researchers, practicing physicians, or literature searches. Formulates a problem or project to research. Designs procedures to solve the problem. 

4.       Conducts experiments using advanced equipment and applying complex techniques. Procedures may include 3D printing, additive manufacturing, and biophysical assays and measurements.

5.       Designs experimental procedures, which may involve examining new techniques, that may improve existing analysis and provide additional capabilities.

6.       Evaluates the data from the analysis. 

7.       Presents results in a written paper for publication, in a presentation at a meeting, or through personal contact with faculty members and other researchers.  

8.       Maintains lab equipment, assists in necessary repairs, and promotes a safe laboratory environment. Ensures direct reports follow safety procedures and attends basic safety training courses.

9.       Provides work direction and guidance to personnel within department. May lead projects and activities.

10.    Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

Doctorate Degree.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years of experience in a related research environment and have verifiable publications within biomedical engineering and/or neuroscience. Experience with CAD/CAM/Unix environment/Freesurfer/Matlab/3D printing/Python/R preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. 

This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.

SECURITY SENSITIVE: 

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215
