Position Summary:
Provides advanced medical care to patients in a multidisciplinary clinic specializing in rare genetic neurological disorders and epilepsy, often with comorbidities. Works closely with the neurology team, genetic counselors, researchers and other specialists to deliver comprehensive care. Supports detailed report preparation, patient care coordination and research studies.
Position Key Accountabilities:
1. Clinical Care and Patient Management
o Conducts complex, standardized patient care procedures requiring advanced training.
o Evaluates patients with rare genetic neurological disorders and epilepsy, addressing both primary conditions and associated comorbidities.
o Monitors and adjusts care plans based on the evolving needs of patients with complex conditions.
2. Diagnostic and Treatment Support
o Orders and interprets laboratory, diagnostic, and radiographic tests.
o Works closely with the genetic counselling team.
o Coordinates with the neurologist to identify and implement personalized treatment plans for patients with rare genetic epilepsies.
o Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings to align care plans across specialties.
3. Patient Education and Counseling
o With guidance and support from rare disease experts, provides comprehensive education to patients and families about rare genetic epilepsies, their associated comorbidities, and available treatment options.
o Facilitates understanding of genetic test results in collaboration with the genetic counseling team.
o Provides guidance on managing complex conditions, medications, and preventive care.
4. Care Coordination
o Acts as a liaison between patients, neurologists, genetic counselors, and other specialists.
o Ensures smooth communication across the care team, addressing any patient or team concerns promptly.
5. Documentation and Reporting
o Compiles detailed patient reports, integrating data from genetic counseling, neurology evaluations, and diagnostic findings.
o Prepares comprehensive summaries for use in multidisciplinary team discussions and for referring physicians.
o Ensures that all documentation is accurate, thorough, and completed in a timely manner.
6. Research and Continuous Improvement
o Participates in clinical research or quality improvement initiatives related to rare neurological disorders and epilepsy.
o Performs patient assessments for clinical trials.
o Stays informed of the latest advancements in genetic testing, rare epilepsy management, and related care practices.
Certification/Skills:
- Current Texas Licensure as a Physician Assistant; current Physician Assistant certification issued by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified.
- Proficient in the use of medical and surgical instruments and equipment required by work.
- Interested in working with adults and children with rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorders and epilepsies.
- Interest in clinical research and precision medicines
Minimum Education:
- Master’s degree as Physician Assistant. Bachelor’s degree as Physician Assistant with at least two years of professional experience in the role is acceptable based on terminal degree requirements at the time of graduation.
Minimum Experience:
- Previous experience in a neurology, genetic disorders, or epilepsy-focused practice preferred.
- Familiarity with multidisciplinary care settings is highly desirable.
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
